Floor Plan Symbols & Abbreviations: What Every Marking Means Before You Build

A floor plan is written in shorthand. Architects pack an enormous amount of information into a compact set of letters, lines, and symbols — and if you don't know the code, "WH" and "DW" and a wall full of little arcs might as well be another language. This is a plain-English guide to what the markings on your floor plan actually mean, so you can read your own plans with confidence before you build.

The abbreviations: what the letters mean

Most of the labels on a floor plan are short codes for rooms, appliances, and construction notes. Here are the ones you'll run into most.

Rooms and spaces

  • BR — Bedroom · MBR / PBR — Master (Primary) Bedroom

  • BA / BTH — Bathroom · PDR — Powder Room (half bath)

  • KIT — Kitchen · DR — Dining Room · LR — Living Room · FR — Family Room

  • FOY — Foyer · MUD — Mudroom · UTIL — Utility Room · GAR — Garage

  • CL / CLO — Closet · WIC — Walk-In Closet · LIN — Linen Closet

Appliances and fixtures

  • WH — Water Heater · FURN / FAU — Furnace (Forced-Air Unit) · AC — Air Conditioner

  • DW — Dishwasher · REF / RF — Refrigerator · RNG — Range (Stove) · MW — Microwave

  • W/D — Washer / Dryer · SK — Sink · WC — Water Closet (toilet) · TUB — Bathtub

If you searched specifically for what WH means: it's the water heater — one of the most commonly Googled floor-plan labels, because it's easy to mistake for a room. One quick caution: abbreviations aren't perfectly universal. Most architects follow these conventions, but some use their own shorthand, so always check your plan's legend or key (usually on the first sheet) when a code isn't obvious.

The symbols: what the lines and marks mean

Beyond the letters, a plan is built from a visual language of lines and symbols:

  • Walls — Thick lines are exterior or load-bearing walls; thin lines are interior partitions. This matters: moving a thin wall is a small change, while moving a thick one is a structural decision.

  • Doors — Drawn with an arc showing which way the door swings. That arc is real floor space, and it tells you what the door might block.

  • Windows — Shown as breaks or thinner lines in the wall, often with sill-height notes.

  • Stairs — A run of parallel lines with a direction arrow and UP or DN to show which way they go from that floor.

  • Plumbing fixtures — Sinks, toilets, tubs, and showers are drawn roughly to their real shape and scale.

  • Electrical — Small standardized symbols mark outlets, switches, and light fixtures, often with dashed lines connecting a switch to what it controls.

  • Dimension lines — The chains of numbers along the edges. These are the truth of the plan — trust them over how the drawing looks.

  • Scale and north arrow — The scale ratio (like 1/4" = 1'-0") tells you how the drawing maps to real size; the north arrow tells you how the home is oriented to the sun.

Reading the plan once you can decode it

Once you can read the symbols, a few habits help you get the most out of a plan. Always trust the dimension strings over how the drawing looks — a drawing is a scaled cartoon of the measurements, and the numbers are what get built. Read the actual width of the hallway, the pantry, the shower, and picture yourself inside it. Check the scale ratio so you know what you're looking at, and find the north arrow to understand where the light will come from.

But here's the honest limit: knowing what every symbol means still only gets you so far. You can decode a plan perfectly and still not be able to feel whether a room is the right size, because proportion, volume, and flow aren't things the page can give you.

From symbols on paper to standing in the space

The most expensive misjudgments in a build don't come from misreading a symbol — they come from not being able to experience the space. A hallway that's technically wide enough on the plan can still feel tight. A great room that reads generous on paper can feel cold and cavernous in person. Those are the gaps that turn into costly change orders once the walls are framed.

That's the whole idea behind a plan walk: once your plan is projected at full 1:1 scale, you stop decoding symbols and start walking your actual home — catching what paper can't show you while changes are still cheap.
